Electrical Safety & Unexpected Risks: A Cautionary Tale from a Recent Installation

A Valuable Lesson Learned – Risk Assessment is Key

At TEIGE Electrical Services, we pride ourselves on delivering reliable and safe electrical solutions. However, our recent work in an educational setting recently presented a stark reminder: even well-intentioned modifications can quickly escalate into serious electrical hazards.

The Incident: Foam, Fluorescent Lights & a Potential Fire

During a recent installation within a music room, we noticed a layer of foam material covering the ceiling space above six fluorescent light fittings. Our initial assessment suggested this had been added as a form of sound insulation, aimed at preventing sound from traveling through the ceiling space and impacting surrounding areas.

Here’s where things took an unexpected turn – and why we want to share this experience openly.

Unfortunately, this foam matting was layered directly on top of the existing fluorescent light fittings. The heat generated by the ballast within these fittings rapidly caused the foam to heat up and begin to melt. This melted material dripped directly into the light fitting and its ballast, igniting a small fire.

Thankfully (but not thankfully!), the situation was contained. The foam, once sufficiently distanced from the heat source, self-extinguished due to a lack of fuel. Only one fitting exhibited signs of ignition – a powerful illustration of how vulnerable electrical systems can be to unexpected interference.

Important Assumptions & Caveats:

We want to be absolutely clear: we are not fire investigators, and we do not hold formal qualifications to make definitive claims about fire risk assessments. This account is based solely on our observations and experiences while conducting electrical work. However, this incident underscores the critical importance of meticulous risk assessment and communication.

Key Takeaways & What You Need to Consider:

  • Potential Interference: Even seemingly harmless modifications – like adding sound insulation – can significantly impact the performance of electrical equipment.
  • Heat Buildup: Any material placed in close proximity to a heat-generating component can exacerbate heat build-up and increase the risk of fire.
  • Communication is Crucial: Open communication between building occupants, designers, and electrical contractors is paramount to identifying and mitigating potential risks.
